You qualify for Smog Inspector only 

To receive a Smog Inspector certification you will need to take two classes: 

  • Level 1 Inspector:  Engine Control Fundamentals Training

  • Level 2 Inspector:  Smog Check Procedures Training

Training specifics:

  • Training is 96 hours in length

  • 12 weeks to complete evening classes



Are one of these statements below true?

You have ASE A6 Electrical, A8 Engine performance, and L1 Advanced engine performance certifications. 

You have an AS or AA degree or higher in Automotive Technology from a state an accredited or recognized college, Public school, Trade school, and have one year experience in automotive repair in the area of engine performance. 

You have a certificate in Automotive Technology from a state-accredited or recognized college, school or trade school with a minimum of 720 hours of course work that includes at least 280 hours in the engine performance area, and have a minimum of 1-year of experience working in an automotive repair facility in the area of engine performance.

Since you said yes to having met the requirements of having ASE and or formal education in Automotive Technology and have one year of experience as an automotive technician you only need one class to get both inspector and Repair licenses


To receive both Smog Inspector and Repair certifications you will need to take one class: 

  • Level 2 Smog Check Procedures Training

Training specifics:

  • Training is 28 hours in length
  • 4 weeks to complete evening classes

You qualify for Smog Inspector and Repair

Since you said no you will need to take two classes and show proof to the BAR of having at least two years of experience as a technician in a licensed automotive repair dealer

To receive both Smog Inspector and Repair certifications you will need to take two classes: 

  • Level 2 Smog Check Procedures Training

  • Bar Specified Diagnostic Repair Training

Training specifics:

  • Training is 100 hours in length

  • 12 weeks to complete
